Living a Healthy Lifestyle

Leading a Healthy Life:
Six Steps to Living Long and Staying Healthy

Step 1: Give your body the energy it needs.

Your body needs some foods to stay strong and healthy. Other foods, if eaten too often, contribute to many illnesses. Here are some guidelines:
  • Eat 6-11 servings a day of breads or grains, like rice, pasta, tortillas, or cereal.
  • Eat 3-5 servings a day of vegetables, like carrots, cabbage, tomatoes, broccoli, or peas.
  • Eat 2-4 servings a day of fruits, like apples, peaches, mangos, bananas, or fruit juice.
  • Eat 2-3 servings a day of meat, fish, beans, eggs or nuts, for protein.
  • Eat 2-3 servings a day of dairy products like yogurt, cheese, or milk.
  • Cut down on alcohol, fatty foods such as butter, grease, or oil, and “junk food” like chips or candy.

Step 2: Stay physically active.

Regular physical activity helps people:
  • live longer and feel better throughout their lives
  • be stronger and more flexible
  • build strong bones and fight osteoporosis
  • prevent depression
  • strengthens your ability to fight off illness
  • maintain a healthy body weight
It is best to get at least one half hour of exercise three times a week, but any amount of exercise is better than none at all! If you do not want to go jogging or swimming, try going for a brisk walk with a friend, working vigorously in the yard, or riding your bike to work.

Step 3: A healthy mind is part of a healthy body.

When you are in a good state of mind, you make good decisions for yourself about your job, your lifestyle, and your health. Here are some things you can do to keep your mind healthy:
  • Reduce stress in your life. For ideas on reducing stress
  • Make time in your life for things that are fun. Make a list of activities you like and sure you have at least a little time each day for doing something you enjoy.
  • Get enough sleep. Most Americans get too little sleep. Being sleepy reduces your concentration, increases mood swings, and causes many car accidents.
  • Get help if you feel depressed or anxious for more than several days at a time. Talk with a friend or your health care provider for some help.

Step 4: Keep your mind and body free of harmful drugs and alcohol.

  • Tobacco causes more health problems than any other drug and is the most addictive, most widely used. Cutting down or stopping the use of cigarettes, cigars, or chewing tobacco can save your health and save your money.
  • Too much alcohol is definitely dangerous, causing liver damage, fetal alcohol syndrome, and accidents. The tricky question is, how much is too much?
  • Street drugs like marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, or pain pills not prescribed for you are dangerous to your health. Street drugs can be diluted with substances that are harmful for you. People often put themselves in dangerous situations to get street drugs. If you are using street drugs and would like to stop but are having difficulty, talk to your health care provider.

Step 5: Practice safe living habits

Did you know...
  • Accidents and injuries are the fifth leading cause of death in the US among children, they are the second leading cause of death.
  • Women under 35 are more likely to die in motor vehicle accidents than from any other cause.
  • Accidents in the home cause thousands of permanent injuries every year.
Here are some steps you can take to stay safe:
  • The most common accidents are fires, falls, and drownings. Help yourself and your family to stay safe by installing
    • smoke detectors,
    • have your vision checked
    • learning to swim.

  • Stay safe on the road.

    • Wearing a seatbelt dramatically reduces your chances of death in an accident.
    • Keep children under 60 pounds in an appropriate car seat or booster.
    • Do not ride with someone who has been drinking or drugging.
    • Wear a helmet when riding a bicycle or motorcycle. Find more information about highway safety at National Highway Traffic Safety Administration,
  • Find protection from people who are violent or threatening in your life.
  • Wash your hands regularly to avoid the spread of germs.

Step 6: Get regular health care.

  • Many people think they only need to see a doctor when they are sick or injured. The truth is, health care providers are also experts at preventing illnesses and finding and treating problems before you ever feel sick.
  • Find a health care provider who works WITH you.
  • Know what diseases you are at risk for and attend regular screenings for them.
  • Get yourself and the children in your family immunized against life-threatening illnesses. Find more information about immunizations at the Center for Disease Control Web site at http://www.cdc.gov/nip/

Fasting and Natural Detox

Why have people been fasting for thousands of years? What are the advantages of fasting? What are the different types of fasting? Does fasting really help you detoxify?

Fasting are practised by thousand years by human in the world.
Source: google.com
In history,

Fasting, in the various forms that people have observed throughout history, has
been known to have a beneficial effect on health. However in a religious context, it is primarily a technique for seeking proximity to God and the divine. It seems that every religion knew the practice of fasting in one form or another. In the archaic practices of Hinduism there were certain days of the year set aside for fasting by women, and others for men. In our day, the Brahmin caste in India still observes a complete abstinence from food and drink on the eleventh and twelfth days of every Hindu month.

-Hipocrates-
Hippocrates (400 BCE), the mythical Greek "Father of Medicine," seems to have prescribed total abstinence from food while a "disease" was on the increase, and especially at the critical period, and a spare diet on other occasions.

Fasting was also known to the ancient Egyptians and Greeks. Similarly, the ancient scriptures of Persia advocate fasting and confirm its value as a means for spiritual purification. The Jews of the Old Testament were known to observe fasts on days of danger and misfortune and on several fixed days in their calendar, of which the best known to non-Jews is the fast of Yom Kippur. Jesus is said to have fasted forty days and nights before his final entry into Jerusalem.

The early Christians, most of whom observed the Mosaic Law, also fasted on the Day of Atonement. But with time, less emphasis was placed on exact adherence to the practices observed by Jesus, and the Lenten fast assumed a largely symbolic role, involving abstention from certain types of food only.

Muslims observe an annual fast, during the month of Ramadan. Between first light and sundown, adult Muslims in good health abstain from food, drink, cigarettes, and sex. The fast lasts for an entire lunar month of between 29 and 30 days. It is described in the Quran thus "so that you may attain taqwa or God-consciousness" and is another instrument for bringing believers closer to our natural state and for cleansing this state from the dross of any disobedience and corruption.

Fasting for detox,

In the strict dietary sense, fasting is the complete abstinence from all substances except pure water, in an environment of total rest. Juice fasting, a popular variation, is abstinence from all food and drink except water and fresh vegetable and fruit juices. A modified fast includes small amounts of solid food, usually raw fruits as well as raw and steamed vegetables.

Other types of fasts sometimes include brown rice fast, whereby only brown rice is eaten for a week, accompanied by water. Detoxification is the foremost argument presented by advocates of fasting.

Detoxification is a normal body process of eliminating or neutralising the toxins resulting from biochemical functions through the colon, liver, kidneys, lungs, lymph nodes, and skin. Fasting precipitates this process because, when food no longer enters the body, the latter turns to its fat reserves for energy.

When the fat reserves are used for energy during a fast, they release the stored chemicals from the fatty acids into the system and are then eliminated through the above mentioned organs.

Another benefit of fasting is the healing process it triggers. During a fast, energy is diverted away from the digestive system, since there is no food to mobilise it, towards the metabolism and immune system. This is one reason why animals stop eating when they are wounded, and the reason why we feel less hungry when we're sick.

Fasting also triggers rapid weight loss. Once the body is in fasting mode, it becomes accustomed to go without food after a few days. After a fast, the stomach actually shrinks and is restored it to its normal size. People tend to be satisfied with less food after fasting, as the latter signals to your body that you've altered the way you eat.

Beware of bingeing after a fast, especially if you starved your body to extreme! You could defeat the whole purpose of the fast.

When is a good time to fast?

The best time to fast is in spring and summer. Source: google.com
Spring fasts are highly recommended because the increased physical vitality and availability of fresh produce and vegetables in the spring and summer can make the cleansing process pleasant and beneficial. For a winter fast, plan a short 2 day program, like a weekend fast for instance.

Long, unsupervised fasts can be dangerous. If you plan to fast for more than 2 or 3 days in a row, you must consult your natural health practitioner or doctor before you start.

Patricia Bragg Ph.D. author of "The Miracle of Fasting" writes "Proven throughout history for physical, mental and spiritual rejuvenation, fasting promotes cleansing and healing; helps normalize weight, blood pressure, cholesterol; rebuilds the immune system; and helps reverse the aging process. If we are to get these poisons out of our bodies we must fast. By fasting we give our bodies a physiological rest. This rest builds Vital Force. The more Vital Force we have, the more toxins are going to be eliminated from the body to help keep it clean, pure and healthy."

How to Lose Weight

You know the drill when it comes to losing weight: take in fewer calories, burn more calories. But you also know that most diets and quick weight-loss plans don't work as promised. If you're trying to drop a few pounds fast, these expert tips will make it easy for you to lose the weight quickly.

1. Write down what you eat for one week and you will lose weight.

lose weight         Studies found that people who keep food diaries wind up eating about 15 percent less food than those who don’t. Watch out for weekends: A University of North Carolina study found people tend to consume an extra 115 calories per weekend day, primarily from alcohol and fat. Then cut out or down calories from spreads, dressings, sauces, condiments, drinks, and snacks; they could make the difference between weight gain and loss.

2. Add 10 percent to the amount of daily calories you think you’re eating

If you think you’re consuming 1,700 calories a day and don’t understand why you’re not losing weight, add another 170 calories to your guesstimate. Chances are, the new number is more accurate. Adjust your eating habits accordingly.

3. Get an online weight loss buddy to lose more weight

A University of Vermont study found that online weight-loss buddies help you keep the weight off. The researchers followed volunteers for 18 months. Those assigned to an Internet-based weight maintenance program sustained their weight loss better than those who met face-to-face in a support group.

4. Get a mantra
You’ve heard of a self-fulfilling prophecy? If you keep focusing on things you can’t do, like resisting junk food or getting out the door for a daily walk, chances are you won’t do them. Instead (whether you believe it or not) repeat positive thoughts to yourself. “I can lose weight.” “I will get out for my walk today.” “I know I can resist the pastry cart after dinner.” Repeat these phrases and before too long, they will become true for you.

Raw Food Diet

AIM

Depends, but may include weight loss, improved health and helping the environment.

THE CLAIM

Raw food is packed with natural enzymes and nutrients that help the body reach optimal health – and you’ll shed pounds.

Raw diet may decrease our body
eight. Source: google.com

THE THEORY

Raw foodism traces back to the late 1800s, when Maximilian Bircher-Benner, a doctor, discovered he could cure his own jaundice by eating raw apples. Thus began a series of experiments testing the effects of raw food on human health, and the diet has continued to evolve. Raw food hasn’t been cooked, processed, microwaved, irradiated, genetically engineered or exposed to pesticides or herbicides. It includes fresh fruits, berries, vegetables, nuts, seeds and herbs in their whole, natural state. Proponents say cooking obliterates most of the vitamins in food and nearly all of the immune-boosting plant nutrients (though scientific evidence to support these claims is lacking). Most who follow the plan consume only half the calories they would eat on a cooked diet.

HOW DOES THE RAW FOOD DIET WORK?

There are numerous variations of the raw food diet, and you have the power to shape your own. Typically, though, about 75 to 80 percent of what you eat each day will be plant-based foods never heated above 115 degrees Fahrenheit. (Very few people follow a 100 percent raw diet.) Most followers are vegan, but some choose to consume raw animal products, such as raw (unpasteurized) milk, cheese made from raw milk, sashimi, raw fish and certain kinds of raw meat. You’ll eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, sprouts, seeds and nuts, including cashews, sunflower seeds and raw almond butter; some foods are marked as raw and sold at grocery stores, while others require home-prep. Grains are also OK, as are dried organic legumes (think lentils, chickpeas, adzuki beans and mung beans) eaten raw. Other common choices include cold-pressed extra-virgin olive oil; raw virgin coconut oil; and raw coconut butter. Freshly-squeezed vegetable juice and herbal tea are also staples.

What’s off-limits? Anything pasteurized, all processed foods, refined sugars and flours, table salt and caffeine. Say goodbye to pasta, baked goods, junk food and most store-bought juices, drinks and milks. (Homemade juices using fresh fruits and veggies are OK.)
You’ll need to learn how to properly prepare your food. Raw foodies become expert at juicing, blending, dehydrating, sprouting, germinating, cutting, chopping and rehydrating. A dehydrator, for example, uses low temperatures and a fan to dry out food. Dehydrate peeled and sliced sweet potatoes for five hours, and you’ll have crunchy sweet potato chips. To make chocolate chip cookies, grind raw cashews and oats in a food processor or blender to create dough; then mix coconut oil, carob and cocoa powder, maple syrup and vanilla to make chocolate chips; and then combine the two and place them in the freezer for 30 minutes.

Hello and very good evening to all citizen in Malaysia.(cewahh!! speaking la pulak...).

Ok, dah selesai bab speaking, sekarang ni pulak aku nak cakap pasal listening a.k.a mendengar.

Aku ingat lagi masa first time aku ada kelas listening and speaking.

Biasalah telinga orang melayu ni.. manalah cekap sangat nak dengar lagu inggeris ni, kalau macam lagu roman cinta ker... oklah.. hehehe..

ok lah setakat ni saja aku nak merapu bab english ni. Nanti kalau ada apa2 perkara yg agak interesting, bolehlah aku post nanti. Ok, that all from me, thank you..
